Why an Acid Fume Scrubber Is Different

Acid fumes aren’t just gases — they’re a two-phase challenge. HCl and HNO3 form fine mist droplets (0.1-5 micron) when they contact humid air. These droplets behave differently from gas molecules: they’re harder to absorb, they deposit on ductwork causing corrosion upstream of the scrubber, and they contribute to visible stack plume even when gas-phase removal is complete. A scrubber designed for acid fumes addresses both phases: gas-phase absorption via counter-current packed bed with caustic scrubbing solution, mist capture via the packed bed itself acting as a mist filter, and a high-efficiency chevron or mesh pad demister at the outlet capturing re-entrained droplets and eliminating visible plume — which is often the complaint that triggers a regulatory inspection.

Why Xicheng

16 years, 2600+ systems shipped worldwide. Acid fume scrubbers are our highest-volume product line. The experience that comes from building thousands of them translates into details that matter:

  • Material selection per acid, not per price. HCl at 50 C is one thing. HF at any concentration etches glass and attacks standard PP at weld zones. Mixed HNO3 + HF pickling bath exhaust requires HF-grade PP or FRP. We don’t guess — send us your acid types and concentrations; we specify the material from our compatibility database built across thousands of installations.
  • Pre-engineered for electroplating. Plating shops present unique challenges: multiple exhaust sources (degreasing, pickling, plating, rinsing), intermittent operation per bath, and chromium mist from hexavalent chrome plating — a listed carcinogen with specific regulatory requirements. We’ve built hundreds of electroplating scrubbers and understand push-pull ventilation for open-surface tanks, separate duct runs for chrome vs non-chrome exhaust, and sizing for peak simultaneous operation.
  • Anti-clog spray nozzles. Acid mist carryover can form salt deposits (NaCl, Na2SO4) that clog standard spray nozzles within weeks. We use large-orifice PP spiral nozzles with 6-8 mm minimum passage — they pass salt crystals without blocking. Combined with automatic fresh-water flush on shutdown, nozzle maintenance intervals extend from weeks to quarters.

FAQ

What is the difference between an acid gas scrubber and an acid fume scrubber?

Acid fumes contain both gas-phase pollutants and liquid-phase mist droplets. A fume scrubber is designed for both phases with packed bed absorption and high-efficiency demisting. A gas-only scrubber may lack the demisting stages needed to eliminate visible plume from mist carryover.

Do I need a separate scrubber for chrome plating?

Yes. Hexavalent chromium (CrO3) mist is regulated separately with much lower emission limits due to its carcinogenicity. Chrome exhaust should be on a dedicated duct run with its own scrubber and HEPA filtration polishing stage.

How do you prevent salt buildup in the packing and nozzles?

Large-orifice spray nozzles (6-8 mm) pass salt crystals without blocking. An automatic fresh-water flush cycle rinses the packing and sump on system shutdown. We recommend quarterly packing inspection and cleaning.
