Scrubber Packing Media

Scrubber Packing Media — PP Pall Rings, Raschig Rings & Structured Packing

Packing media is the heart of a packed bed scrubber — it provides the surface area for gas-liquid contact that drives mass transfer and pollutant removal. According to chemical engineering design principles, packing media selection affects removal efficiency by up to 30% at the same bed depth. XICHENG EP supplies virgin PP random and structured packing in industry-standard geometries with SGS-tested material certification.

Packing Type Size Range Surface Area Best For
Pall Rings 16mm, 25mm, 38mm, 50mm, 76mm, 100mm 90-340 m2/m3 General acid gas scrubbing, low fouling
Raschig Rings 16mm, 25mm, 38mm, 50mm 110-360 m2/m3 Simple geometry, high liquid holdup
Tellerette Rings 25mm, 50mm 130-180 m2/m3 High efficiency, particulate-laden gas
Hollow Balls 25mm, 38mm, 50mm 100-200 m2/m3 Fluidized bed, self-cleaning
Structured Packing Custom sheets/blocks 250-750 m2/m3 Highest efficiency, low pressure drop

How to select the right packing size and type

Packing size is determined by column diameter ratio (D/dp > 15 for proper liquid distribution). A 1,800mm scrubber can use up to 100mm Pall rings. Smaller packing (16-25mm) provides higher surface area but increases pressure drop and fouling risk. For clean acid gases (HCl, HF), 38-50mm Pall rings offer the best balance of efficiency vs pressure drop. For particulate-laden streams or applications prone to scaling, Tellerette rings or larger (76-100mm) Pall rings resist fouling. See our packing media selection guide for detailed trade-off analysis.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often does packing media need replacement?

PP packing lasts 8-15 years in clean acid gas service. Premature replacement is usually caused by fouling (insoluble salts, polymerization byproducts) or chemical attack (solvents that swell PP). Regular inspection during annual scrubber maintenance identifies early degradation.

What material is the packing made from?

Virgin PP (polypropylene). No recycled or regrind material — ensuring consistent chemical resistance and mechanical strength. SGS material certification provided. PVDF and CPVC packing available for special chemical environments above PPs temperature or chemical limits.

How much packing do I need for my scrubber?

Packing volume = bed depth x column cross-sectional area. Bed depth is calculated from required removal efficiency and packing HETP (height equivalent to a theoretical plate). Typical: 2.0-4.0m bed depth. Contact our engineering team with your airflow and pollutant data for a complete sizing.
