Product Overview
Specialized wet scrubber for chlorine (Cl2) gas removal from industrial exhaust streams. Chlorine is uniquely aggressive — it attacks standard PP through oxidative degradation, causing embrittlement and premature failure. We build Cl2 scrubbers with oxidation-stabilized PP formulated specifically for continuous wet chlorine exposure, validated at inlet concentrations up to 500 PPM. Scrubbing chemistry: Cl2 + 2NaOH to NaOCl + NaCl + H2O.

Why Chlorine Requires a Specialized Scrubber
Chlorine isn’t just another acid gas. In contact with water it forms hypochlorous acid (HOCl) and hydrochloric acid (HCl) — a two-pronged attack: acid corrosion plus oxidative degradation. Standard PP exposed to wet Cl2 above 50 PPM can lose 30-40 percent of its tensile strength within 2-3 years through chain scission of the polymer backbone. An oxidation-stabilized PP formulation adds antioxidant packages and free-radical scavengers that interrupt the degradation chain reaction — the difference in service life is typically 3-5x. For inlet Cl2 concentrations above 500 PPM or combined Cl2 + HF service, we recommend FRP or 316L stainless steel — contact our engineers for a material recommendation specific to your gas analysis.

Why Xicheng
16 years, 2600+ systems shipped worldwide. Chlorine scrubbers fail in predictable ways — and we’ve seen them all. The three most common failure modes and how we prevent them:
- Caustic depletion. Cl2 consumes NaOH at roughly twice the rate of HCl on a molar basis. An undersized chemical dosing system can’t keep up, and within hours your scrubbing liquor goes acidic — at which point Cl2 off-gasses from the sump. We size the caustic dosing system for the stoichiometric requirement plus 50 percent margin, with automated pH-controlled dosing that maintains pH above 10.5 at all times.
- Hypochlorite accumulation. The NaOCl byproduct builds up in the recirculation loop. Above 5 percent free chlorine equivalent, it attacks even stabilized PP. We calculate the blowdown rate required to keep NaOCl concentration below the material threshold and include automatic blowdown with conductivity-triggered makeup water as standard.
- Exotherm management. Cl2 absorption into NaOH is exothermic — about 150 kJ per mole of Cl2 reacted. For high inlet concentrations, the scrubbing liquor temperature can rise 10-15 C across the tower. We include a heat exchanger or cooling coil in the recirculation loop when the calculated adiabatic temperature rise exceeds 8 C.

FAQ
How is a chlorine scrubber different from a standard acid gas scrubber?
The material is the key difference. Standard PP degrades under wet Cl2 exposure through oxidative chain scission. We use oxidation-stabilized PP with antioxidant packages that interrupt the degradation mechanism. The chemical dosing system is also different: Cl2 consumes NaOH at twice the molar rate of HCl, so dosing pump and day tank must be sized accordingly, and NaOCl byproduct must be managed through controlled blowdown.
What Cl2 concentration can a single-stage scrubber handle?
Up to 500 PPM inlet with stabilized PP, achieving over 95% removal in a single stage — discharge under 5 PPM. For 500-2000 PPM, we recommend FRP construction and two-stage design. Above 2000 PPM, a multi-stage system with interstage cooling and potentially stainless steel internals is needed.
Do I need continuous Cl2 monitoring?
For chlor-alkali plants, large water treatment facilities (over 500 kg/day Cl2 usage), and any site covered by major hazard regulations: yes, we strongly recommend CEMS at the stack. For smaller installations, a dual-range Cl2 sensor with alarm relay on the discharge line is typically sufficient.
