Carbon monoxide (CO) presents a unique challenge for wet scrubbing because it has extremely low solubility in water (≈2.3 mL/100 mL at 20 °C). Unlike HCl or NH₃ which dissolve readily, CO requires chemical absorption rather than physical dissolution.
- Copper-ammonia absorption: CO forms a complex with cuprous ammonium compounds (Cu(NH₃)₂⁺). The CO-loaded solution is regenerated by heating, releasing concentrated CO for recovery or further treatment. This is the most established wet chemical CO removal method.
- Catalytic oxidation: For many industrial exhaust streams, the most practical approach is catalytic oxidation of CO to CO₂ over a precious metal catalyst (Pt/Pd) at 150–300 °C. The CO₂ can then be removed with a standard caustic scrubber if emission limits require it.
- Limited wet-only removal: Standard packed bed or spray tower designs without chemical reagents achieve <10% CO removal. Do not specify a water-only scrubber for CO control without chemical augmentation.

How Does The Carbon Monoxide Scrubber System Work?
Step 1: Gas Intake & Pre-treatment
In the initial stage, the acid mist exhaust gas is collected by the suction hood, then flows through the PP air duct into the scrubber. The anti-corrosion centrifugal fan draws the gas into the system, slowing down the gas flow to prepare for the neutralization process, while the PP structure protects the equipment from raw corrosive gas damage.
Step 2: Spray Washing & Neutralization
As the gas flows upward through the packing layer, it fully contacts with the sodium hydroxide alkali solution. Step 3: Demisting & Adsorption

Step 4: Clean Gas Discharge
